Can I have a prepayment meter?
There are lots of advantages to having a prepayment meter installed. Also, If you choose to switch to prepayment, we’ll upgrade you to the latest technology smart meters for free.
Be aware you'll need to keep your meter topped up because you have to pay in advance for the energy you use.
We want to provide you with the best service, please weigh up the features of the meter and decide if it's right for you:
Features
- You'll have control over how much money you spend on electricity and gas.
- You'll no longer receive bills requesting a lump-sum payment.
- Annual statements will show you how much gas or electricity you've used.
- There’s emergency and friendly credit in case you run out and can't top-up for any reason.
- With a smart prepayment meter, you can top up anywhere any time through the UW Clubhouse app
Paying off an outstanding balance
You can use your prepayment meter to repay any outstanding money you owe us. Your payments are spread based on what you can afford, interest-free. Unlike other customers who have a credit meter, if you're using a prepayment meter to pay debt and it's under £500, you can switch suppliers and transfer the debt.
Things to be aware of
- We'll send you your new prepayment top-up card which you can use to top up at any Paypoint or through your mobile phone.
- There are minimum daily charges to pay, even if you’re going away. Even when you switch off all or most of your appliances, your meter will still collect a daily standing charge. So, please make sure there’s enough credit on your meters to last. If you don't, any appliances you’ve left on like your boiler or freezer may switch off.
- You have to pay in advance for the energy you use.

If you already have a smart meter, we can easily switch your meter to prepayment mode free of charge.
